What Vaccines Does My Pet Need Before Being Boarded?

Responsible pet owners should ensure their pets get protection against preventable diseases before boarding them. Many boarding facilities require you to vaccinate your pet to protect the health of all the animals in their care. Specific vaccines depend on your pet's age, health status, and lifestyle.

Distemper Vaccine for Dogs

One of the most important vaccines for dogs is the distemper vaccine. Distemper is a highly contagious and potentially deadly disease. It affects the respiratory, gastrointestinal, and nervous systems.

The vaccine given is usually a combination vaccine. It will protect against parvovirus, parainfluenza, and other diseases. Dogs should receive their first dose of the vaccine at six to eight weeks of age and a booster every three to four weeks until they are 16 to 20 weeks old. After that, they typically receive booster vaccines every one to three years, depending on the specific vaccine.

Distemper Vaccine for Cats

Cats also need the distemper vaccine, also known as feline panleukopenia vaccine. It is often a combination vaccine that protects against feline herpesvirus and feline calicivirus. Cats should receive their first dose of the vaccine at six to eight weeks of age and a booster every three to four weeks until they are 16 to 20 weeks old. After that, they receive boosters every one to three years, depending on the specific vaccine and your veterinarian's recommendations.

Rabies Vaccine for Dogs and Cats

Rabies is a vital vaccine for dogs and cats. Rabies is a viral disease that affects the central nervous system. It is transmitted through the saliva of infected animals. It is almost always fatal once symptoms appear. The law in many areas requires dogs and cats to receive a vaccination against rabies.

The first rabies vaccine administered to puppies and kittens often happens at 16 to 20 weeks of age, and a booster one year later. After that, boosters are typically given every one to three years, depending on the specific vaccine and your veterinarian's recommendations.

Other Recommended Vaccines

In addition to the distemper and rabies vaccines, several other vaccines may be ideal for your pet before boarding. These may include:

  • Bordetella vaccine for dogs - This vaccine protects against kennel cough and is usually given as a nasal spray or injection. It should be administered at least two weeks before boarding.

  • Canine influenza vaccine for dogs - This vaccine protects against a highly contagious respiratory illness known as canine influenza. It is administered as a series of two or three doses, with boosters given every one to two years.

  • Feline leukemia vaccine for cats - This vaccine is ideal for cats at high risk of exposure to the virus, such as outdoor cats or cats living with infected cats. It is often administered as a series of two or three doses, with boosters given every one to three years.

Other Health Concerns and Preventive Measures

Discuss other health concerns or preventive measures with your veterinarian before boarding your pet. It may include flea and tick prevention, heartworm prevention, and necessary medications. Your veterinarian can help you determine the best course of action to ensure your pet's health and well-being while they are away from home.
